As I walked away from the rocky promontory which juts out into the North Atlantic Ocean on the West Coast of Ireland near where I live in the lovely ancient town of Foxford in County Mayo, I felt I had a clear picture of the God, Manannan
Having a clear picture is always very important in ‘deity tantra’ as I learned twenty years ago when I worked with Tibetan Buddhist and Hindu deities during my social anthropology Field Study, the Ethnography I completed mainly in Glastonbury in England studying ‘spiritual forms new to the modern west’. If you wish to learn more about me and my work take a look at this website www.earthstarweb.com
I really loved seeing a rock pool on the way to the rocky promontory. It was in a rock cleft and it was filled with a jungle of straight upward growing very green seaweed, rather like a vibrant secret submarine forest world. Very striking. A world all of its own.
The promontory was beyond Ennis Crone, just over the northern boundary of County Mayo, on the beautiful Atlantic Ocean mouth of the River Moy which flows through the town of Foxford where I live.
The great sweep of the blue-grey horizon where the sea met the sky on the rim of the world was vast. I called the God and saw him in the form of a man on the shifting waves, merging from the depths of the water to the surface world. The water boiled around the holes pitting the ancient rocks of the wild and solitary shore.
It was vivid how the ocean is also a line of defence – and Manannan has a sword called Fragarach, The Answerer – from the wound of which no man ever recovered. As the vision progressed I learned more and more about Manannan and his message in my life now.
I was creating this meditation journey as part of my introductory course on the ancient Irish Gods where you can also learn about such inspiring, healing empowering beings as The Dagda, The Morrigan, Ogma and Llugh.
I went from the place with a sense of my own sovereignty, warrior nature and of vastness and ever-changing nature.
In earlier journeys we had learned about the many other powerful attributes of this ancient great God. You can enrol on the wonderful courses of my Druid Forest School, including The Ogham.
I look forward to hearing from you and to working with you,
Last night my partner Maggie Pashley and I did a journey to shamanic drumming. Our aim was to meet a Power Animal.
As she started the drumming, Maggie briefly saw at first a stag with horns and then a mountain goat with horns and then many horned animals. But then she saw the horse; a chestnut horse, and then fairly quickly he got her on his back.
‘We rode really, really fast like the wind,’ Maggie reported. ‘At times it was exhilarating, almost scary. And then at other times it was stately and very slow. We went up one of the mountains like the Nephin Mountains next to Foxford in Co Mayo in the West of Ireland where we have just come from England to live. Most of our work is worldwide readings healings and courses using the internet, but we look forward greatly to new dimension of our work in Ireland. There’s a photo of the beautiful nearby landscape in this post.
And then we met a snake crawling up the mountain too, and the horse explained there are a lot of people who were frightened of snakes but actually snakes hold great mystery – and people had been taught to be frightened of the mystery, to be frightened of that more mystical place.
The horse told me that he was there so I could know that there was support, that I didn’t have to do everything alone and that he could take me to places that I couldn’t go to on my own; and he told me that he had lots of sensitivity as well as being strong and powerful – and that it was very much a partnership because when we had finished riding and he had taken me to all these places, I would have to look after him: I would have to feed him, groom him, make sure he was honoured and cared for.
We met some birds and the birds were singing and there were lots of animal voices and the horse told me that each animal made up the Web of Life. There was no animal that was more important than any other, how it was very important to talk to everything, and how people had become essentially frightened of life.
Many people are frightened of horses and feared they might fall off and needed to wear a helmet but most such accidents were when there was not a good connection between horse and rider or the rider was overriding their own feelings. But first nation people rode bareback or people were bringing their own issues to the ride.
We met other animals and places and I had the feeling that I was able to cover a lot more ground than I would have been able to do just walking on my own. That it was very exciting to have this partnership and also to have this dialogue.’
For each module you receive audios to journey to. You send reports of your journeys to me and we share on the issues in these. I also look at your western and Vedic astrology: both for your birth and predictively, and this can give such powerful guidance and insight to further empower the journey work.
I also offer wonderful astrology readings worldwide that are exceptional in that they combine both western astrology which is very psychodynamic with Vedic Astrology that powerfully depicts our incarnational life purpose and its unfoldment and how to work with that. See www.starwheelastrology.com.
Or learn Vedic Astrology through one of my worldwide Vedic Astrology Courses. Or you can learn enlightened psychodynamic Western astrology in my worldwide Course.
This post tells you about the Atmakaraka – the ‘Soul Indicator’ of Vedic Astrology.
My name is Michael Conneely. I offer astrology readings and many courses in astrology and other spiritual pathways worldwide from where I now live in the West of Ireland.
I have been teaching very personalised and totally supportive Western and Vedic Astrology Courses for over twenty years. These are expert and worldwide.
Over this period I have also offered vibrant caring worldwide Astrology Readings. These connect with you directly using skype or zoom, and these Readings too exceptionally and unusually combine both Western and Vedic Astrology.
This post is about the Atmakaraka, which is the ‘Soul Indicator in Vedic Astrology. Your Atmakaraka is the planet of greatest longitude in your Vedic Birth Chart (i.e. the planet nearest to the end of a sign) and as such it carries the principal task which you incarnated this life time to deal with.
It is breathtakingly valuable to have the perception of which planet is your Atmakaraka planet, and how it will manifest in your life.
this is because my Readings and Courses all go on to examine ways you may heal and empower yourself by working with the nature and lessons of your Atmakaraka planet. Take the leap. Empower yourself.
For five years I worked in a university-based social anthropological field study focussing on individuals and communities/institutions following spiritual paths new to the modern West.
I have five university degrees including an M.A. from Oxford University. Oxford University specialises in the Oxford Tutorial method which is totally individual and designed to bring out the very best in your learning.
Your Atmakaraka planet will give you experiences from birth onwards that will challenge you to learn and deal with the usually very difficult lesson that your soul decided you had to work on in this life time.
Vedic Astrology also has predictive periods that unfold very clearly from the moment of birth. The main predictive periods are called Dasas and the sub periods within these are called bhuktis, and the sub-sub periods within these are called antars.
Each period has a ruling planet. And when you are in a predictive period ruled by your Atmakaraka planet then you will experience challenges and usually (great) turbulence in your life with the divine purpose of putting you more on course for learning the lesson demanded by your Atmakaraka.
Vedic Astrology not only has the ‘rashi chart’ or ‘birth chart’ it also has ‘varga charts’ or divisional charts’. One of these varga charts especially focuses on the nature of the demand of your soul this time. It is called your Navamsha chart. It is your ‘9th Harmonic Chart’ and also has very much to say about your relationship issues. You can learn so much from finding out about the position of your Atmakaraka planet in your Navamsha chart, and also from hearing how your Atmakaraka planet in your Navamsha chart relates to the position of your Atmakaraka planet in your birth chart.
I’d like to share with you the lesson of my Atmakaraka planet: the Atmakaraka planet in my individual birth chart. My Atmakaraka planet is the Moon in my birth chart. The Moon is primarily about ‘mothering’ as the major issue in life.
But in my case, this issue is taken a vast step further. This is because in my individual case, my Moon is right at the end of Vedic sign of Pisces in my birth chart. This is in one of the three ‘Gandanta’ positions and means that ‘mother will not be there for you’ and this sets a dominant theme for my life. The existential call therefore is that I learn to ‘mother myself’, to take control of my own destiny.
To have a Gandanta planet also means that so very often the material world will not be there to materially support you.
But there are many other facets of meaning for you to have the Moon as your Atmakaraka planet of course, as there are for any planet as your Atmakaraka planet.
The Moon is the one planet that changes sign all the time so this creates and endless restless unsettled search for meaning which I have to learn to deal with and it creates an endless changeability of mind/emotions which again needs to be perceived, understood and worked with.
My Moon is also ‘unsupported’: it has no planets either side of it, and this too needs to be perceived and understood and compensated for otherwise I can be destabilised emotionally and cognitively.
Moon as Atmakaraka does create a tough script for relationships to have Moon as Atmakaraka as it will manifest as endless search for perfection. Another big challenge for people with Moon Atmakaraka is that it impels them to endlessly nurture others, but of course we need to learn to become very discerning about all the issues that abound in the activity of nurturing in this life.
I’m giving you these very few indicators so that you can get the drift of how immensely practical and invaluable it is to develop perception of your Atmakaraka planet and also learn to manage it, heal it and empower yourself.
Where wanted, I am able to link the perceptions of astrology to a wide range of healing techniques and I also use mantra as an invaluable daily practice to monitor the state of my Mind and emotions and seek to stabilise, strengthen myself and above all re-motivate myself and to powerfully seek each day to become the special spark that I, like each one of us, was born to become.
Just to show how the analysis can be taken even further: My Moon is in the same sign in my Navamsha (or soul) chart as it is in my birth chart. This means that it is in a powerful position called ‘Vargottoma’. If you have a Vargottoma planet your soul will keep sending you special messages through your life to seek to put you on track.
Incidentally my partner Maggie Pashley, and my son Deaglan, both have Saturn as their Atmakaraka planet. This is a totally different kettle of fish from Moon as Atmakaraka. To have Saturn as Atmakaraka planet means (among other things) that you will have to experience and deal with a lot of sorrow (and suffering) in your life to test your mettle and offer you the opportunity to spiritually and ethically uplift yourself for your own benefit and the benefit of others, and teach you to find spiritual joy in the face of suffering circumstances. There will be a great sense of spiritual responsibility and debt and shedding past negative karma.
There’s many other issues as well with understanding your Atmakaraka planet, for example: put quite simply, here are just some of them:
What is your soul-path?
What respective roles do material and spiritual themes play in your life and how should they inter-relate?
What are your soul’s goals and the goals of your individual planets and how do these inter-relate?
What is the true nature of your experience: what is ‘reality’ and what is ‘illusion’?
How strong or weak is your Atmakaraka planet – and what is the implication of this?
Is your Atmakaraka planet benefic or malefic and what will this mean in your life?
How is your Atmakaraka planet affected by conjunctions with other planets including the Nodes of the Moon (rahu and Ketu)?
What is the implication of the House placement of your Atmakaraka planet? (mine is in 9th House so its message also tells (among other things) about my script for fathering. Is the House your Atmakaraka planet falls in a positive or a challenging House?
It is also valuable to erect a separate chart that puts your Atmakaraka as first house and thus see what role all the rest of your chart plays in the issue of your soul unfoldment.

Are you expressing your soul – or are you expressing an Illusion about yourself?
Soul Astrology for you! This is Western and Vedic Astrology combined
It is Psychodynamic Astrology plus the use of the powerful Vedic ‘Arudha padas’.
This post tells you about the difference between what Vedic Astrology and Western Astrology can reveal about the crucial question, namely:
Are you living in accord with the desire of our soul?
Or are you are living in accord with some very different way of projecting yourself into the world?
My worldwide Astrology Readings are expert and very caring and they always combine psychodynamic Western astrology with Vedic Astrology.
My worldwide Astrology Courses teach Vedic Astrology in three levels and I also teach a most enlightened worldwide psychodynamic Western astrology course.
You can overlap between western and Vedic astrology when you study with me, if you wish.
So, on the key question we are looking at today of: what are we expressing as we project ourselves into the world? Well, the point is that our habitual expression of ourself in the world can actually be very different from how we would be if we were actually expressing our essence and the desire of our soul.
The two forms of expression can be very different. And the problem is that this can lead to all sorts of distortions, misunderstandings, lost opportunities, drain or illusions.
In Vedic Astrology, this question is tackled by examining ‘Arudha padas’. This is a most powerful and valuable part of the wonderful intuitive branch of ‘Jaimini Astrology‘ within Vedic Astrology.
But in Western astrology, however, this question is tackled by use of psychodynamic astrology and also by Nodal or Soul Astrology.
Let me now explore briefly with you how I can help you by using and combining these two models:
First of all, you need to know that Vedic Astrology has a system of ‘Arudha Padas’. This system shows what we are manifesting in the world, and this reflection can actually even be completely different from, and even at odds with, the ‘real thing’, with our true abilities, with our soul essence. What we project can actually be a distortion of this.
So, in Vedic Astrology, each of your 12 Houses has an ‘Arudha’ or ‘reflection’. So to give you an idea of how the system works, let me tell you that my Ascendant or Rising Sign (i.e. my Lagna or 1st House) in Vedic Astrology is in the Vedic sign of Cancer.
This means that I will naturally tend to relate to the world in a very caring and sensitive way, naturally help people (even if they haven’t asked for help), focus on feelings, be intuitive, be loyal to mate, but maybe cling to hurts etc. Cancer is ruled by The Moon, and my Moon is in the deeply sensitive Vedic sign of Pisces.
However, my Arudha Lagna is a totally different kettle of fish: My Arudha Lagna as the description of how I project in the world is conjunct the fiery planet Mars in 5th House Scorpio in my Vedic birth chart.
My Mars is ‘Raja Yoga’ in Scorpio, so this means Mars is very powerful in my chart, in my life. It’s investigative, it’s warrior spirit, it’s intense, it’s deeply intuitive, and it wants it now! That’s how Vedic Astrology says I will actually project into the world. It’s obviously so very different from my Rising Sign (called my Lagna).
You can take the exercise a fascinating and deeply intuitive whole stage further by looking at aspects to your Arudha Lagna. In addition, for example, there’s the wonderful net of meanings mapped by Vedic Astrology’s Argala system for just one example, and I have three planets in the sign before my Arudha Lagna. This is ‘negative argala’. And one of these three planets is a ‘weak Sun’. How can a weak sun learn to control and direct a ‘Raja Yoga’ Mars in Scorpio???
So, pause for a moment to reflect how I can in fact be completely mistaken by people, how I can completely confuse myself, how I can treat people in two very different ways.
Other people can see my Mars in Scorpio: my intense presentation and just not realise that there is the sensitive person behind the mask. In Astrology groups when the game ‘guess what sign the other people are’ is played, I found I’m most usually taken to be a Scorpio. Indeed, I, myself, can blaze obsessively into tasks and so cause stress for my sensitive Moon and undermine the caring ideals of my Cancer Ascendant.
It is so very, very useful to be given this perception.
But the crucial and essential next task for each of us is to use the perception to heal our patterns and come into our true empowerment. All my courses and reading are geared to healing and empowerment perception and techniques.
Remember, not understanding our Arudha can even lead us to pour our energies and direct our strategies into completely barren or ill-advised pursuits.
In fact, each House in your Vedic birth chart has its Arudha, so this perception is so worthwhile to receive either through a Reading or in a course.
In Western Astrology, when it is done well, the equivalent framework is called psychosynthesis. Modern Western Astrology is actually mainly geared to analysis of our ‘egoic psychology’, and this is so worthwhile to understand.
When you receive a reading or study a course from me, you have the opportunity to identify your ‘sub-personalities’ and this is used in psychosynthesis to gain overall understanding and knowledge of our Self.
Psychodynamic Astrology has a predictive dimension so that means we can receive indication of what part of our overall personality is receiving special highlight during what part of our life. Sub-personalities can be worked with and understood using ‘psychosynthesis roleplay’ and ‘inner child work’ and such like.
There is a whole ‘soul dimension’ based on the position of the Nodes of the Moon in the Western Astrology birth chart (founded by Martin Schulman) and thus a statement can be derived in Western Astrology of how our egoic psychological self is the result of past life energies.
Again there’s a whole invaluable predictive unfoldement dimension to this Western Nodal Astrology too: it’s called The Nodal Age point and it charts the ‘whisper of our soul to us’ from the astral at any given period.

We had just moved from England to the West of Ireland ten days before, so as you can imagine the time before and after the move was very full of packing and unpacking, ferry bookings and dealing with our new Irish Authorities. One difficulty after another was encountered, but so far all of them were sorted out like magic. There’s a picture of the nearby beautiful Lough Conn in this post.
We are still waiting for internet to be installed at our home. Vodafone failed to turn up as promised on Tuesday and this has made things very difficult because all my worldwide readings and courses depend on internet. Vodafone now say they are coming on September 1st!
So the shamanic journeying I did very much reflected the situation I am in at the moment – and this is the important thing: it healed me and guided me and strengthened me.
Shamanic journeying is done to trance drumming, and the first animal that I saw in this vision journey was a clam. A clam!?! Well, yes, that’s appropriate because I have been ‘clammed up’ unable to do most of my work and unable to find the time to communicate.
And then I saw that the clam was living on the bottom of the ocean and being fed by the waters there; and we are now living near the ocean.
We are living in the beautiful historic village of Foxford in County Mayo on the lovely River Moy, a great location for Shamanic Journeying and in which to further develop my own specialist Shamanic skillset, between two ranges of Mountains, and it’s really is close to the sea. A few kilometres to the West, there’s beautiful Clew Bay at the foot of Croagh Patrick Mountain near Westport which was the site of the retreat Saint Patrick did where he bested the spirit of place: Corra consigning her for eternity to the Lough below the Mountain (or so he thinks) and then he set out to convert Ireland to the new universal Catholicism. It’s the site that inspired my novel Druid which you can get from Amazon.
And a few kilometres to the North there’s miles of lovely beach near Ballina: I am going there this weekend to do a journey to contact the ancient Irish God, Manannan for a student of mine in USA.
So what this first power animal taught me is that the clam was being fed by its reclusive time hidden away at the bottom of the ocean, and I was thankful for this guidance but felt very much I wanted to spread my wings and go back to developing my work
Then I saw a second power animal. This was a lovely white horse. And then I saw it had wings. A few months ago I saw the film a Winter’s Tale in New York and this meant a real lot to me where it teaches that we are each here to manifest our special spark. The heroes of the Tale were beset by forces of darkness, but at each crisis a winged white horse came and rescued them or vanquished the gangsters. And I saw my winged white horse in my shamanic journey head into the rays of the sun and this really helped me to take charge of my focus again and manifest the destiny I came here to do.
So to do my shamanic healer or other courses, get in touch. You can register at the foot of my shamanic healer website page: http://www.earthstarweb.com/shamanic-healer.html .
